Five Things You May Not Know About Mexican Food

Mexican foodWith just about everything, it seems there are two prominent types of fans: those who enjoy something a lot but don’t dig for details or fun facts about their passion, and those who know every little thing about a particular subject. California Burritos knows Mexican food in and out, but perhaps our customers don’t, and that’s okay! We’re here to give you some fun facts to share the next time you chow down on one of our burritos.

1.) Traditional Guac Isn’t Authentic – To Mexicans, At Least.

When you think of Mexican cuisine, there’s no doubt you probably conjure up an image of guacamole. Tons of people love it and get garlic and lime flavors injected in the traditional ingredient. However, that is not how it was intended if you want to have an authentic Mexican experience. In Mexico, it is a rarity to find lime in guacamole, and you won’t find garlic in guacamole no matter where you go.

2.) The Margarita Comes From An Unexpected Source

Margaritas are a staple with Mexican food and have come a long way since their inception in the 1940’s. It is so ingrained in Mexican culture and cuisine that it’s hard to associate it with any other country. The origin story may surprise you: legend has it that the margarita came from a German ambassador’s daughter! When Margarita Henkel visited Mexico, she requested a combination the bartender then made: tequila, Controy, lime, and ice – now known as one of your favorite drinks.

3.) Tortillas Were Canned

It’s hard to picture visiting a supermarket and purchasing a tortilla that does not have a wrap and is flat. However, this used to be the norm. From the 1940’s through the 1980’s, tortillas came in cans. Can you imagine opening up a can full of tortillas? A strange idea, indeed.

4.)  Mexican Meals Aren’t Bad For You

Contrary to popular belief, Mexican food isn’t all that bad for you, as long as you don’t indulge too much. Authentic, well-made Mexican cuisine provides an excellent balance of nutrients, low-fat, and plenty of protein. So, the next time you dine at a Mexican eatery, you don’t need to feel as guilty!

5.) Each Region Has Its Tastes

If you’re planning on visiting Mexico and think that you’ll find the same dishes everywhere, you’d better have a backup plan! The dishes across the country vary widely by region. In Northern Mexico, you’ll find dishes where meat is prominent and the most favorite ingredient. Go to the southern states, however, and you’ll find dishes packed with chicken and vegetables. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
