September 16th is a big day for your favorite Mexican restaurant, California Burritos. Not only is it Mexican Independence Day, but it’s also National Guacamole Day. Now, both of these celebrations are important to us for different reasons, but guacamole is a part of our daily lives, so we think it’s worth celebrating. Not long ago, we shared how to make the perfect guacamole at home on our blog. However, we only touched briefly on how to keep your guac fresh. In this article, we’re going to give you some more tips.
No one likes brown guac. Take these tips from the pros at our Mexican restaurant to keep your guacamole green and fresh.
Quality over Quantity
The simplest way to keep guacamole fresh is only to make as much as you’ll eat at one time. For most of us, that’s pretty easy because guac is fantastic and easy to polish off. When you make guacamole with just a few fresh ingredients, you won’t want to leave any in the bowl. Guacamole is also the perfect party food, so more likely than not, you’re sharing it with other people who will help you ensure there are no leftovers.
Create a Barrier
While “leave no leftovers” is a surefire way to prevent your guac from turning brown, it’s not always a viable option. So what do you do when you have to save some for later? Guacamole turns brown when it is exposed to the air for an extended period, so the trick is to create a barrier between the surface of your leftover guac and the air. To keep it as fresh and green as possible, there are a few steps you should take. First, put the leftover guacamole in a container with a lid you can seal. Next, pat the top of it flat with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Before putting the cover on the container, pour a thin layer of water, lime juice, or lemon juice over the surface of the guacamole. This thin layer of liquid creates a barrier between the guacamole and the air to keep it from turning brown. Finally, put the cover on the container and put it in the fridge.
When you’re ready to finish off your leftovers, pour the excess liquid away and stir the guac a little to restore the consistency. Grab some chips and dig in!
